"It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare."

It’s a bright morning and no wind, so it is very pleasant and we have been getting on as normal with all the horses. We still have one or two of the younger ones with snotty noses, which we have had to treat, but it is always the same at this time of year. They are just like school children that get coughs and colds and catch everything going. It is better to get these things at this time of year, rather than in the grass turf season.

We have quite a lot of bird life in our yard with plenty of wagtails and sparrows, but one of the biggest numbers is pigeons, who love to nest under the rafters in the indoor ride. This is all well and good, but they do tend to take liberties at times and this morning was no exception, when one swooped in to feed its brood just in front of Steve Avery and Astrovirtue. A parting of the waves occurred and only I was allowed to smile as the ones behind got a good glare, but I am sure they were grinning within as it is usually one of them that Steve is legging back up after a similar episode. I will have to get my air rifle out again and pop a few off.

There is plenty of chat today in the Racing Post on different gambling subjects, whether it is the gaming machines once again, or point of consumption tax. It looks to me like the gambling industry is in for a real change in the next few years, and with everybody starting to bet on their mobiles and computers, the days of the old fashioned betting shop look more and more doomed. It would be fascinating to look back in ten years time and see how it has changed from today. I wonder how many racecourses will have disappeared as well. I am sure there will be at least five more all-weather tracks by then and we will have become more like America, dependant on artificial surfaces.
