Cantering up the hill

It is an overcast morning but quite muggy, and with no wind, I am sure the temperature will rise considerably as the day goes on. We have been out cantering on Bury Side, and as usual on a Bank Holiday, everybody just carries on and works as if it is a normal day. All the staff get a day off in lieu, which can be taken when it is convenient for both of us.

We have one runner today, over hurdles at Huntingdon. Akula runs in the 3.10, which is a 2 mile handicap hurdle. He was disappointing last time at Fakenham, where he never got into the contest. I have been freshening him up every since and lets hope he will perform much better today. My Guardian Angel ran with credit yesterday, but the rain certainly didn’t help our cause. He got slightly hampered by a faller, but I will not make too many excuses as it was certainly up in grade, and he was far from disgraced. I am sure he can be back on winning ways shortly.

The debate continues about Good Friday racing, and as you know, I have always been against the idea as I think we will soon be having racing on every day of the year, including Christmas day. It is only the marketing gurus and bookmakers who want this mass of fixtures, and although there will be a few dinosaurs, such as myself stand up against it, we will be overruled by people who have no interest in the sport, and have no feelings for the horses or the staff within it. They only want to make money for their masters and shareholders. My only comment is, there are 361 other days of the year to improve the product and produce the cash. Why don’t they concentrate on those and leave four days free?
