"Oaths are but words, and words but wind."

Samuel Butler.

Astrocat (Sinead) and Nancy (Tom)

It’s a very similar morning to yesterday, with perfect conditions and a perfect temperature. We have been out on Warren Hill and Side Hill today, where I have been giving Hold Firm a good spin left handed, as he is to run at Epsom tomorrow. He was also given two or three goes through the stalls yesterday, just to keep his mind concentrated as he was taking the mickey last time at Yarmouth. I think we will see a different horse tomorrow.

It was the racehorse owners annual meeting yesterday and there is a full report on it in the Racing Post today. All the normal things were chivvied out, but we have been hearing the same old speeches for years, without us actually getting anywhere. We held a National Trainers Federation meeting in Newmarket yesterday and a similar thing happened there. There are plenty of ideas thrown about, but there never seems anybody with the wherewithal to see these things through. The big discussions with us were race planning and the pattern, anabolic steroids, and how that hasn’t been thought though properly, and all the repercussion that could happen as there is no call on the sales company’s to bring in the rules, and what the extra £4.5 million from the bookmakers should be used for. Should it go to prize money and increase it down to 8th place, or should it go in a travelling grant which would encourage people to run their horses further a field? As usual there were plenty of opinions and all varied enormously. In a nutshell, we need less fixtures and more prize money. That would sort the whole mess out, but I feel neither will happen and we will just continue on this route.

Crystal Pearl ( Sinead)

There is a great article on Nashwan today, which was trained by the great Dick Hearn. It is all about the horse and what can happen in training and racing. It is what it is all about when you have a good horse like him; it makes all the hard work worthwhile. These horses are very hard to find and when you get them, you must enjoy every minutes you have with them, whether it be training, owning or riding. Horseracing is all about the horse and nothing else.
