No Rules (Steve)

We have had about 7 or 8 mm of rain overnight and a bit of an on-off drizzly morning, so I am hoping to be able to run Smokey Oakey this afternoon at Newmarket. I sent Steve Avery off second lot to walk the course and he has reported back that, in his opinion, it is good ground.

Both the fillies were disappointing yesterday and, I am sure, there must be a reason, for which I will be endeavouring to find the solution in the next few weeks. Both of them were well enough at home but, yesterday's showing, was nowhere near their home work. Both the Newmarket runners ran well and I think Watch Chain was, especially, unlucky not to have won.

Only the one runner today at Newmarket, Smokey Oakey, who runs in the mile condition race. These contests are always pretty tricky and are, sometimes, falsely run contests but, I am sure, he will put up a reasonable show today. Pat Cosgrove takes the ride for the first time.

The final day of Glorious Goodwood with the Stewards Cup as its showpiece race. It looked yesterday in the consolation race that high numbers had a big advantage but they have had a bit of rain overnight and it may have changed everybody's thinking today. This Glorious Goodwood week has been a resounding success and, as I said, earlier in the week, everybody should make every effort to attend at some time in their lives. I am sure they won't be disappointed.
