It’s a really mixed morning and after heavy showers, we have now got bright blue sunshine. We only had approximately 3mm though, which will not alter the ground much as you need at least 15mm plus to really start to change the going, but it looks an unsettled forecast for August and hopefully we can have some runners. A very quiet morning cantering wise, with just one canter and a walk back through the woods, which has all gone without a hitch so far.

We have one runner today at Lingfield on the all-weather. Topaling runs in the 5.00, the 1m 4f handicap, which is as far as she has been in her short career. I am hoping a step up in trip can help and I don’t think she is without a chance of running well.

I want to introduce you today to our new chaplain of racing, Simon Bailey, who has taken over from Graham Locking as chaplain to the horseracing industry. Simon is a lovely bloke and I am sure he will fit in just as easily as his predecessor. He loves all sports and his brother is a professional cricket umpire, after having a very successful playing career, so he will fit in well with a lot of the cricket mad trainers we have in town. This service is fantastic and is very much underrated as you don’t see a lot of the work going on behind the scenes. It is what we have always wanted in the industry but never had until Graham came along. We wish Simon all the best in the future and will give him all the help we can.

I see the BHA chairman, Steve Harman, predicts a strong interest in the chief executive vacancy on Paul Bittar’s departure. I was pleased to see Harman stated there should be no shortage of qualified candidates from Britain, which was music to my ears. I can’t wait to see who the lucky recipient of the position is.
