Stallion prices for next year

Wednesday, 05 November 2014

"Appearances are not held to be a clue to the truth. But we seem to have no other."

Ivy Compton-Burnett.

Blue Bounty (Abbie)

It's down a few more degrees this morning and I certainly had two coat layers out on the heath, unlike one or two of my contemporaries who were walking about in open necked shirts and not much else. I must be getting a southern softie. We had an easy morning  with one canter and a walk back through what I call the copse.

Hold Firm (Yaz)

I never thought I'd see the day when a member of the bookmaking fraternity would be in charge of the BHA. If the Racing Post is to be believed, and there's no reason to doubt it, we are to get Nick Rust who at present is working as managing director of Ladbrokes retail operation. I don't know who appoints these positions, and I doubt we ever will find out who gives the green light to these jobs, but unless Mr. Rust is the most brilliant leader we have ever had, whoever it is has a lot to answer for. It will be fascinating now to see what happens now to the "Racing Right" which is what the industry is aiming for to replace the Levy, as the betting industry has always favoured keeping the Levy in some other form. We will just have to wait and see what the future brings, but with the BHA board being completely reformed, and four people who understood racing now leaving, I feel the hierarchy of racing will become very similar to many other sports - completely out of touch.

I'm too tired to smile for the camera

All the stallion stud farms are announcing their fees for next year at present and it continues to amaze me how expensive they are. They seem to keep going up and up and I cannot see the justification for that as although we have had some high prices at the yearling sales it is all because of a very select group of buyers. The breeders need encouragement and good value stallions would be a great start.
