They need a re-think

Hold Firm leading the way

It’s another very damp and wet morning but the temperature has held up well and it is not cold at all. We have a full compliment of staff in today, plus Jimmy Quinn, and we got on well with the older horses with them all going different places and doing different canters. It varied from the Town Canter to Bury Hills, Warren Hill and Side Hill. I was like a jack in the box darting about everywhere, but they all did as I wanted and there is plenty of excitement ahead.

It is becoming a regular situation in Newmarket nowadays, and I don’t quite know where they come from or where they are made, but every month or six weeks we have the High Street and Bury Road shut for five minutes or so whilst the police escort a massive lorry carrying a boat. This happened again this morning at about 8.30, at the height of the rush hour, if you can say Newmarket has a rush hour, but why they don’t do it at 10 o’clock at night when everything is quiet I don’t know. They always go towards Ipswich and the coast and there must be a boat yard there which finishes them off and puts them in the water. One day when I have got absolutely nothing to do I will follow one and find out!

I see they have announced plans for the new additional voluntary contribution from the bookmakers, which was supposed to start over a year ago and will now be starting from December 1st this year. There’s £4.5 million from the bookmakers and £500,000 from the Levy Board. It sounds a lot but I am not sure how much good it will do, as when you read the small print on page 9 of the Racing Post, it says “payments will not be on top of existing prize money where place prize money is already equal to or above payment levels, but used to insure that the minimum levels are reached.” This looks to me as if it’s just helping the races which give pitiful prize money at the moment. I can’t see it really helping and I don’t think enough thought has gone into it. It should improve prize money, not just top it up.
