Sylvestre de Sousa is doing so well ...

We are off to Kempton today

"Winter is the season in which people try to keep the house as warm as it was in the summer, when they complained about the heat."

Walking to exercise at second lot

It’s an overcast morning but dry and as normal for a Monday,  it has been a little bit hectic. We have got horses at the sales, horses going racing, as well as all the normal exercising and business to do. It would have been nice if everything had gone smoothly, which it did at first lot, but then we got an awkward one that seemed to upset every string in Newmarket. Mixed in with this was a loose yearling of somebody’s that had cantered up the Town Sand and it all made for quite a bit of action until everything calmed down. Just a normal Monday morning really.

Who's that coming over the hill?

We have one runner today at Kempton. Astrowolf runs in the first, the 2.20. He was very disappointing last time but I don’t think he stayed, and we are back 3f in trip today. I will be wanting to see a much better effort from him today. His debut run was full of promise and he is in good order, so let’s hope he can put his best foot forward.

The mixers for the Mactrac

I see they have announced that the jockeys are to be compensated if there is a late non runner and that the owners association have agreed this. I can see their reasoning, but from a trainer’s point of view if the clerk of the course has given us the wrong ground, or it rains in the morning of the race or even an hour before and the going changes, can the owners be compensated for all the travelling money and expenses incurred. This compensation culture has to stop somewhere and I am not certain that this non runner jockey’s thing has been thought out properly. I don’t think it will do anything to stop the number of non runners, in fact I think it will cause more agro that it is worth. Once again I feel it will affect the smaller owners more than the bigger ones.
