Horse welfare is paramount ...

Winter is on its way

After a clear night, it is a bright, dry, sunny morning and although cool, we have had no frost and it’s a smashing winters day. We have been going quiet with the horses today as they did fast work yesterday and we are starting to move a few horses about. Some of the fillies are going for a month to six weeks out and the yearlings are on their way in. We are also getting ready for the holiday period with stocks of hay and feed, as the deliveries will be very different over that time.

The BHA has announced their new board overhaul, with six brand new members. It is hard to know what to make of it as they have all got very little connection with racing, other than a few of them having an interest in horses. It may be the best thing that has ever happened, but I will hold my judgement until they have settled in and we can see which direction they are trying to take us. It is a really diverse board and I look forward to their views on the future of our industry.

My comments on the mare’s sale were, I think, correct enough yesterday, as although we had a £4 million sale in Just The Judge, the majority of which was bought back by the owners, both the average and the median were a long way down on last years Wednesday sales day. There were a lot of horses not sold, some for quite big sums, and I think realism is starting to hit our industry. Maybe my comments on the board above about the future of the industry should make them realise we live in a sport that is about horses that race against each other and the excitement that brings. This is the side that needs promoting more to the public rather than wasting money on Great British racing and promoting the Champions Series.
