In and out as quickly as possible ...

The cold is here to stay

"You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."

Topamichi (Frankie) cantering at first light

It’s a very cold morning and I don’t think it has got above zero all day. There is still a hard frost and you need two coats on just to go out of the office. We have ventured down to the Al Bahathri gallop first lot with some workers, which all went well, and a few two year olds had a canter on Warren Hill. However, the majority have stayed inside in the indoor ride where they can do plenty of cantering work, which keeps their backs down. It looks like it is going to stay this way for the next few days at least.

Walking home in the frost

I see the big saviour of racing, The Champions Weekend, has been scraped already, after just one year, with the Newmarket Future Champions Day being divided off. I am not too sure what Newmarket wants, but the stupid idea of having the Middle Park and the Dewhurst on the same day has certainly been scraped. Why we listened to the idiotic people who have no idea about horses, and what is best for them, I will never know. Let’s hope common sense can now win the day and we can get it right for once. Mind you, Newmarket wants to change the July Cup back to its normal slot, rather than be on the Saturday.

Hold Firm (Ali) leading the way in the indoor ride

I see the Jockey Club Racecourses are going to automatically give six free admission tickets to any owner who actually enters a horse at any of their tracks, regardless of whether they run or not. It looks to me like a way of improving figures for total attendance of race meetings, as most owners already get free entry if they are members of the ROA. It would be interesting to see how many people take up this offer, especially mid week. I personally think it is a slight of hand to keep up numbers.
