Horse welfare is paramount ...

Happy Birthday Rebecca

Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Cantering on racecourse side

It’s an overcast and coldish morning, but thankfully there is no wind. Its one of those really busy Mondays, with horses cantering, horses going off racing, mares being covered and owners visiting. Most of the horses have been around Side Hill and Warren Hill and all has gone well so far.

My Guardian Angel (Joe)

We have two runners today, both at Chelmsford City on the polytrack, if you can call it polytrack, as it is now a mixture of fibresand at Southwell and polytrack at Kempton. I think the small field sizes that we are getting at Chelmsford are purely down to the surface, as the prize money is holding up reasonably well. Our first runner is Topamichi in the 1m 2f handicap. He ran well there on his only appearance and should be competitive again today. There are a couple with better form than him, but have not run for a while and let's hope he can get his head in front once again. Hold Firm runs in 1m three-year-old handicap at 5.00. He won well last time on the Tapeta at Wolverhampton and I hope he handles this surface today. He should have a sound chance if he does.

Becky, the farrier, working hard

I see the Great British racing are once again meddling with our industry and changing the jockey’s championship, with its supposedly going to run from the Guineas meeting to the Champions meeting at Ascot. This means from May to October. I think it is completely barmy and very unfair to everybody. These championships, in my opinion, should run the full calendar year and be on winners alone, both jockey and trainers. At present the jockeys run on winners and the trainers go on prize money, which is completely barmy in itself. There would be far more excitement if both sets ran on a yearly basis and went on winners only, but as normal we are ruled by people who know very little about our industry and have to justify their existence by changing things.

Happy birthday to Rebecca Marriott, who is one of our lucky owners and is involved in all the Sarabex horses. They have had 17 winners and 33 places in the last six years since being owners with us. We hope she has a fantastic day, and thank you for my wine gums.
