Our industry needs someone like Tony McCoy

Cantering in pairs on Long Hill turf

It is a very similar day to yesterday, with no wind and it looks like it will be a proper spring day. You can nearly see the grass growing in the fields on the yard and the daffodils and all the bulbs are really starting to bloom now. They have opened Long Hill turf canter this morning and that is where we have been cantering the horses. All has gone well so far.

Topamichi (Frankie) and Hold Firm (Reece)

Our horses look a good bunch this year, with the mixture of older experienced ones, a good group of very lightly raced three-year-olds and a very balanced lot of two-year-olds. I am bringing them on slowly and fast work has just started with the older ones. We were discussing this time of year on the heath yesterday and laughing at the fact it always baffles us when horses we don’t expect to show that ability do and the ones we think are going to be the stars, disappoint. That’s what keeps this sport interesting, as sometimes the ducks can be swans.

Sant'Elia (Joe) and Prayer Time (Brian)

It was Tony McCoy's last day as a jockey riding in Ireland yesterday and there is a smashing picture of him shaking hands with as many race goers as he could round the parade ring at Fairyhouse. What a man he has been for our industry and although he stated yesterday he wasn’t going to be a trainer and wanted a proper life, I hope the broadcasters can persuade him to work with them on a regular basis, as his input would be invaluable and would improve the programmes no end. It is what we want, somebody who has done the job at a high level and can tell the public how it is, in a very similar vain to John Francome. I am afraid the majority of the ones we have now on the TV screens have limited knowledge. It always surprises me that when we watch football or cricket we have the retired players analysing the game, not somebody who thinks they know about it. It would be marvellous if we could have more people who know about our game rather than the other.
