Band of Thunder

It’s a damp morning with good showers of rain followed by periods of drizzle. It is very overcast and looks like being this way for most of the morning. I think we are going to get a couple of days of this type of weather and then showery during the week. We have had a very good morning so far with the horses cantering on the Rubbing House polytrack. They are all moving well, look great and we just need to start having some winners now to get back on track. We will be having some runners from Tuesday onwards and a couple of new two-year-olds will be making their debut during the week.

I see the debacle of Super Saturday, or whatever they call it, is being debated once again in the papers. I think this is the fourth or fifth year everybody has called for changes, but as normal nobody is taking any notice. The sooner Newmarket goes back to Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for their July meeting the better. People can plan ahead, whether it is the professionals with the jockeys etc. or the punters just having a great week of racing, three days of Newmarket followed by York on the Saturday. It couldn’t be better, but it is so simple and simple is not what the authorities seem to want.

Walking home in the drizzle

It was good to see Brian Toomey back after his dreadful fall and although it wasn’t  a fairytale return, he got round safely. What an inspiration he is to the generation of young people nowadays. Let’s hope he can get his career back on track now and get the support he deserves. This story of recovery from very near fatality is a marvellous one and shows the racing industry in the light it should do. It is getting harder and harder to compete with the big battalions who are taking over all the top horses and jockeys, plus the yards and studs and it is great to have some news like this which touches everybody in the industry.
