Mr Turner having a gentle canter

It’s an overcast morning with the wind just starting to get up and I think we are forecast a few showers later on in the day. Everything has been out and had a good walk and trot, plus a few have had a gentle canter over 4f. We are now halfway through our antibiotic programme, but there is no quick fix and time is the cure. All the staff are working really well. We have had a few new additions this week that have fitted in very well, and let’s hope once we get the horses back healthy, the winners will start to flow again, which everybody deserves.

Hold Firm

I can’t help but agree with the BHA on its stance of a jockey who was banned for gambling. He applied to work back in a yard very quickly and quite rightly, in my opinion, they said no. it is like sending somebody to prison for three years and after a fortnight saying he can go out on day release. Whilst on the jockey front I thought last week’s case of barging by Olivier Peslier on Dartmouth, when winning at Goodwood, was a great example of what jockeys are being allowed to get away with nowadays. He was obviously the best horse in the race and looks a group horse masquerading in a handicap, but he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and instead of sitting and suffering, he barged his way out, which could have brought horses down. I think the rider got a seven day ban, but we are sure to have a major accident soon and the penalties for this offence want to be much more severe. It would not have happened in France or America where the horse would have definitely lost the race.

We have started weaning at the stud and so far so good. We take one mare out of the field at a time and the foals have plenty of friends to play with and soon don’t notice that they have been separated. It is amazing how quickly the time comes round, with the yearling sales starting in Deauville next week to kick off the merry-go-round of the season, going right through to December
