It's a sad day for Minder fans

Walking onto the canter

It’s a sunny morning with very little wind. We have had both Jimmy Quinn and Saleem Golam in at first lot, which is always a great help. A good walk and trot and a canter on Southfields round has been the exercise for most of them this morning. I only heard one cough at first lot so they must be going the right way.

I see Rod Millman was agreeing with me that the BHA feel good factor is not universal. He was even using the words that I keep saying, that we are in danger of becoming an elitist sport if we keep putting our head in the sand and ignoring the middle and smaller trainers. If you have got big Arab patrons you are in a very good position, but there are only a few trainers who have got these backers and the majority of trainers who keep the show on the road are definitely struggling. The bigger trainers are getting more and more horses, with at least one third of them not in their yards but being pre-trained, and the middle and smaller trainers, who have got what I call normal owners, the ones that should be cherished, are getting smaller. The BHA must do something to address this and cannot keep coming out with pearls of wisdom that give the wrong impression.

Humphry Repton

It was very sad to see that George Cole of ‘Minder’ fame had passed away. I was the lucky recipient of George’s horses when Patrick Haslam took a sabbatical and the horses moved to me. George loved his racing and I think it gave him another interest and a change from acting. Our condolences go to his family.

Singing Hinnie

There’s a great article on one of Newmarket’s legends today in the Racing Post. Anne Scriven, who was known to everybody as Scrivvey was, and still is a fantastic lady. A story told today by Alastair Down is well worth the read. They broke the mould when they made her and there will definitely not be any more of her ilk. Marvellously loyal and ultra-reliable, she was the epitome of what a PA / secretary should be.
