A warm up trot before cantering

After an inch of rain yesterday,  it's a much calmer day although it's very overcast with a slight breeze. We've had a good morning with horses going in every direction all on Racecourse side. I've had some doing a short canter on the Rubbing House polytrack, and some doing a long canter on the same surface. Others have been on the Southfields Round and they all seem to be coming back to themselves. As I was walking across the grass I was being dive-bombed by the swallows who were feeding on the insects. It makes for a great sight.

Smile That Smile

I don't know what the bookies are up to at present with the announcement today that Betfair and Paddy Power are to merge. This follows hard on the heels of the Coral/Ladbrooke union. There is always an ulterior motive for these movements and I'm sure we will find out later what it is. I just hope our industry is on the ball as its hope for a "racing right" must have something to do with the arrangements.

Regal Galaxy

I have Racing U.K. coming today to do a piece on the stable staff situation which continues to be very difficult across the country. I've been asking around for general opinions both of the training community and of the staff. I think it will take a considerable effort on everybody's part and it will be a long time before this problem is sorted out. There are so many facets starting with recruitment and training to retention of staff. These all need urgent attention along with housing and stable personnel incentives.
