It's definitely a day for waterproofs

It’s absolutely pouring this morning and has been from very early on and the forecast is for it to continue all day until about 4 o’clock. We have all been totally soaked through to the skin, even through the waterproofs. Luckily it’s not that cold and it is just a case of getting them out and back in with a short sharp exercise. This was going to plan until an accident happened to another string on Hamilton Hill, which required the ambulance and doctor and kept the hill shut for quite a while. We have got the vet in again this morning to scope another four and let’s hope they are all clear.

We have declared our first runner for quite a while this morning to run at Lingfield on Wednesday. I am just hoping now we are on the road to recovery and I am planning for a very good autumn. All the horses are well handicapped and if we get any sort of luck we should be having a successful time. All the owners, staff and jockeys have remained very upbeat during the torrid time we have had, and I hope I can repay them with plenty of winners.

It was very sad to read of the death of Bart Cummings in Australia. He was what you can only call a master trainer with a record 12 Melbourne Cups and he was an iconic Australian. I was very lucky to have a few words with him and shake his hand when we took Franklins Garden over for the Cup several years ago. They are talking about having a state funeral for him and I don’t think that would be out of place. Our condolences go to all his family and I don’t think we will ever see his like again.
