Newmarket's  Rowley Mile stands at 6.30 am on Saturday

It's a lovely morning today with a bright blue sky and no wind but we have had, what I always love in Newmarket, banks of very low mist. These only last for a short time until the temperature rises but are very much part of the autumn scene on the Heath. With three runners today staff have been short on the ground but everything has had a good exercise on Racecourse side.

We have two runners at Brighton and one at Windsor today and the ground is starting to dry up. We start with Comrade Bond at Brighton in the seven furlong handicap at 3 o'clock. Any of the six runners could win this and it is a completely wide open race. The small field may suit Comrade Bond and I have put the blinkers back on just to concentrate his mind. Our next runner is Bracken Brae at 4 o'clock in the mile and a half handicap. She ran better than her final position last time at Carlisle as when she came back we found she was full of the virus. She may have a job to handle the favourite, who showed vastly improved form last outing first time in a handicap, but I am sure she will run a sound race today. We then move to Windsor where Smile That Smile runs at 4.50 in the mile and a quarter handicap. She has dropped down the handicap and has had the virus very badly. We are hoping she can bounce back to her best and if she can she will run a big race.

The move of the office went very smoothly on Friday afternoon and other than the telephone reconnection we are up and running as if nothing has changed. I have to take my hat off to the boys who handled the crane, drove the lorry, and positioned the portakabin on the concrete pad. I know it's their job but they were extremely quick and efficient.
