We have one runner today at Chelmsford

Even with high viz jackets it's hard to see the horses

It started off thick fog this morning, in fact the thickest it has been so far this year, but by second lot it had quickly burnt off and it looks like being another lovely day. We have been cantering on Southfields round and Hamilton Hill and all has gone smoothly so far. Everybody is working well, but we need some more members of staff, both riders and yard people. I don’t know whether it is a trait of today’s younger people, but the words ‘work ethic’ seems to have gone out the window.

The sun is breaking through and the fog is burning away

We have one runner tonight at Chelmsford, but as normal we are drawn at Stanstead Airport, which is very unfortunate. Humphry Repton has run four times now, but he has not shown too much on the track yet and I hope this step up in trip might be to our advantage. However, with the draw as it is, he has very little hope of becoming involved.

I see Redcar Racecourse are backing the steel industry in their town, with admission free to anyone wearing a ‘Save Our Steel’ T-shirt for their big meeting on Saturday. It is such a shame when these industries are shut down, especially with an historic industry like steel. I remember the steel industry in Sheffield collapsing and can never understand why our government won’t back such ventures. They are very quick to give money to overseas aid and other such things, but when it comes to helping our own, they often fall down. I wish everybody well in their campaign to keep Redcar afloat.

.. and dishing out the polos

There’s a marvellous article on one of the best horses I ever saw, Sea-Bird, in the Racing Post today. His victory in the Arc by six lengths was mesmerising. It was an unbelievable performance and I don’t think any horse would have ever beaten him that day. There have been so many great horses since win the race, but his achievement that day, to my mind, was number one.

Quite an impressive pair

I have been growing a marrow and pumpkin plant for a while now and I am hoping to show them at a local show this weekend. I will let you know how they get on, but they are quite big, as the picture shows.
