We have two runners today

"You can always tell when two people are best friends because they are having more fun than it makes sense for them to be having."

Cantering on Southfield polytrack

It’s overcast and damp this morning with just the occasional heavy shower on the office roof. We have had just a normal cantering morning using the turf on the Back of the Flat and the polytrack on Southfields round. Apart from a bit of a mix up with another string on the round, all went according to plan. We are busy at present with horses in all phases of exercise. There are some keeping going for the all-weather and hurdles, some going onto the easy list for a couple of months, and we have still got some two-year-olds who were very backward and need to be got on with, plus the yearlings are starting to be broken. Just a normal life!

Our runners yesterday ran well without much luck. I was delighted with Mr Turner who, although it had rained and turned the ground against him, started to show the ability we know he possesses. I can’t wait for next year with him. Hold Firm was beaten by the draw and with any sort of luck would have been right there once again. He is a delight to have anything to do with.

and cantering on the gallops

We have two runners today, starting this afternoon at Southwell. Singing Hinnie runs in the 4.35. We have fitted blinkers today which seemed to improve her at home and it will be interesting to see how she goes. She has always shown me plenty, but has run two very poor races on the track. It may be that she doesn’t stay the two miles, but we will certainly find out that today. Our other runner is tonight at Chelmsford where Regal Galaxy runs in the 5.55, the mile and a quarter handicap. She has not run very well so far, but her dam stayed well and she was just getting the hang of it at Newmarket last time when the race was all over. I would hope she can show much more tonight.

Bracken Brae

I see Ascot are going to offer connections appearance money in an effort to boost runners in conditions and graded races on their National Hunt meetings this autumn. It will be interesting to see how the experiment works. It’s alright for courses such as Ascot to use their money to encourage runners, but if they have got any spare could they please give it to the majority of courses whose prize money needs boosting. It will only fill the pockets of certain owners who can afford the day out anyway.
