Warming up in the trotting ring at first lot

It’s a much better morning with no fog, although it had been forecast. The temperature is still holding up well and there is no wind. A couple of jockeys were first thing, which always helps, and we have had two good lots out on Southfields round canter. We are continuing to break the yearlings and get on with the more backward horses that will be running on the all-weather this winter.

We have one runner today at Redcar. Smile That Smile runs in the 1m 6f handicap at 3 o’clock and Joe Fanning takes the ride. She has only been lightly raced and I think there is still plenty to come on the right ground and distance. It certainly is going to be soft enough for her today and the trip should be ok, so I have got some optimism that she can run a good race.

I got up early this morning to watch the Melbourne Cup which was on Eurosport for the first time. Why At The Races or Racing UK didn’t have it I don’t know but the coverage was very good and at no time did they talk about betting or even show the prices, which was a complete difference to how Channel 4 is running this country. We are bombarded by betting and so called form experts who completely put off the normal viewing public. It was a great race to watch and was won by a 100/1 shot. The winner was given a great ride by the first lady to ever win the Melbourne Cup in Michelle Payne. She comes from a big family, many of them have been jockeys and her brother, who she shares a flat with, led her up and looked after the horse. He has Downs Syndrome and you could see the pleasure it gave the whole of Australia.

Trip To Paris ran a marvellous race to finish fourth and a much quicker tempo would have suited him. Both Frankie Dettori and Jamie Spencer got into trouble with the stewards, one for careless riding, the other I’m not sure what for, but a month’s ban for Dettori and 14 meetings for Spencer were proper deterrents and should be the norm here. It would stop all the madness we are getting with win at all costs.
