We need to sort out accommodation

Desert River leading Hold Firm

We have had plenty of rain overnight but have been lucky that it has been dry most of the morning. Cantering on Southfields round and the turf has been the exercise for the day, plus the younger horses have been coming up Hamilton Hill and they are all starting to get the idea well. I need now to get the clippers round them and smarten them up.

We were very pleased with Bracken Brae’s run yesterday at Leicester where she finished third. She was given a very good ride by Robbie Dunne, jumped very well and will improve considerably for this debut. It is always nice when these horses love the hurdles as it gives them something else to think about. She is a big strong filly, built for this National Hunt game and I can see her maturing in time into a proper racehorse.

We have had the Racing Welfare housing man round this morning with a lady from Cambridge University who is doing a report on the housing needs in the industry. Newmarket has a major demand for single housing for the staff that constantly comes into the business. I have been pressing for ages now for the Jockey Club to build at least 100 single bedsits, which would be filled instantly. The staff work very hard and need a warm, clean and safe place to go home to. It takes ages to get everything in place to build this type of accommodation and the powers that be need to start now getting it in the system. It is not only Newmarket that needs it, but all the centres, Middleham, Malton, Lambourn and Epsom are in desperate need of similar units.
