We worked on the Cambridge Road today

Thomas J. Watson.

Ixchell and Hold Firm

It’s just starting to get slightly colder this morning, but no rain and no wind. However, after hearing the forecast on my way into the yard first thing, I fear the worst for the weekend. Cold and wind and even snow is forecast. It sounds like we will all have to get our coats out tomorrow. We worked a few on the Cambridge Road polytrack where all went well and the rest have been cantering on the Rubbing House and Hamilton Hill tracks.

Humphry Repton and Peeps

There’s a big article today in the Racing Post on what is behind the drop in ratings on Channel 4. The main article by Lee Mottershead doesn’t come up with anything, it is just a waffle about nothing. The reporter’s piece on what David Redvers and Qipco think is more to the point, and as David says it is now a complete yawn and seems to be entirely devoted to betting. We have constantly said it on this website that we need more characters who know what they are talking about, i.e. professional industry personnel, who understand the horses. We have not got a Johnny Francombe who can enlighten us anymore, or actually tell it as it is. In my opinion it needs to go back onto either the BBC or ITV with a big change of presenters and the emphasis on the horses and people involved, rather than on the betting site. I suppose channel 4 were obliged to push the gambling side as they were raking in fortunes from the adverts, which were a constant turn off.

Second lot in the trotting ring

I mentioned Ascot appearance money over a month ago and said it would be a waste of time, better to put that money into something else. Their first appearance money race has only attracted four runners so it definitely hasn’t worked there. I know it is early days but I am sure it will be one of those publicised items which will just die a quiet death.

Cat Island

Our third retired horse of the week is Cat Island. She always showed a lot more at home than she ever did on the track, but has found a very good home. She is another that is shown starring in her new role.
