We have two runners today at Wolverhampton

Warming up in the trotting ring before exercise

It started off pretty wet but it has quickly blown over and now we have a little bit of wind with high wispy clouds. I think all week we are going to get these bands of rain blowing across us, but it is still not cold. We have had a good morning cantering wise with everything having good canters and the two that are running tomorrow had a pipe opener.

We have two runners today, both at Wolverhampton this afternoon. Topaling is our first runner at 3.10. She is a three times course and distance winner and although not up to that form the last few outings, I think she is getting back to something near her best and wouldn’t rule out a big run from her today. She is at least drawn well. Hold Firm is our other runner at 5.10. He is another course and distance winner, drawn not too bad in eight and I am hoping he can get back into winning ways today. An ultra-consistent horse, he always gives up his best and that’s all you can ask.

It was great to see a reasonably priced horse, at €8,500, win a good three-year-old hurdle race in Ireland at the weekend. People can spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on horses and they are never any good, but if you keep persevering and have that little bit of luck, you can get very fortunate and in Rashaan, the owners and trainers have got a live Triumph Hurdle contender. I hope they hold on to it and it can give them a thrill at Cheltenham in March.

I see from the normal paper, not the Racing Post, that the National might go off at 5.15 next year in the vain hope that it will increase viewing figures. Once again the promoters of our sport keep trying to tinker with history. If the National wants a time change to gain viewers then we are in it up to our neck. Why these people can’t just leave it along and understand that the race will sell itself if it’s at is usual time and on BBC. That is the whole answer. Since we have sold our racing to Channel 4 it has only gone one way.
