Delighted with Hold Firm

Friday, 18 December 2015

"No road is long with good company."

Turkish Proverb.

It was a clear starry morning when we ventured out onto the Heath at first lot. It is amazing for this time of year that there was no frost, but here we are the 18th December and basking in 14 degrees. It's been a really good cantering morning with a full complement of staff and jockeys, and we have been giving more education to the backward two year olds. We have had no coughing at the first two lots so let's hope we are over last week's blip. I am positive it is only a reaction to the 'flu jabs which are of course compulsory.

We were all delighted with Hold Firm last night at Chelmsford where he finished second. The winner looks well ahead of the handicapper and I don't know how he got away with only a 3 lbs. rise after beating us last time. We shall only have a few runners now this side of the New Year but have plenty to go at from January onwards.

The BHA are under pressure once again after the wrong result was given at Lingfield on Saturday. As the judge called the result incorrectly the places have now been reversed. They are blaming the quality of the pictures in the fading light, but I don't think that is any excuse whatsoever. In this day and age we should have the proper equipment and the officials should make sure it working correctly and the right result is announced. Our livelihoods depend on winning and losing and the punters deserve to be paid out when the right horse wins. With the debacle at Ascot still on-going this just shows that the BHA officials and management want a shake up. In a professional business everybody should be professional.

I can never understand why it takes so long to disqualify horses if they have had illegal medical treatment. The winner of 2015 Betfred Mile at Goodwood in July has only just been disqualified now and the second horse awarded the race. Why this has taken so long is beyond me.
