We have one runner today at Kempton

"Anyone can catch your eye, but it takes someone special to catch your heart."

We woke up to pouring rain first thing. It was coming down in stair rods and the drains were all struggling to get the rain fall away. Thank goodness it has gradually got better as the morning has gone on, but there were certainly two lots where we got very wet. We had Michael Bowring staying over the weekend and he saw his mare and yearling yesterday on the stud, and the horses in training this morning. Mike has been a great stalwart of the yard for years and has had so many good horses. Everybody remembers Babodana who won the Lincoln and was placed in numerous Group races. Topatoo would be his other really good horse, who won four times at York, including the Middleton. She has got a super yearling colt by So You Think, who we have just named this morning.

We have one runner today with Blue Bounty at Kempton in the 4.40. He ran a reasonable race over seven furlongs last time, but we are back in trip today and certainly must have a chance of being in the frame, if getting any sort of luck.

I don’t know if anybody saw the Welsh Grand National on Saturday, which was run at Chepstow in a complete bog with only six finishers. They were very lucky to get away with the meeting and very lucky that no horse or jockey was badly injured. My personal view is that it should not have gone ahead, but I am sure financial matters were at the forefront of people who run the racecourse. To see horses finishing in that sort of mud and slush is not racing to me and we should be careful in future. They got away with it this time, but it could have been a disaster. In this day and age it does not go down well with the public.
