"What I am is good enough if I would only be it openly."

The sunrise over Newmarket

It’s a bright morning with a very pink / orange sunrise. There is a good frost, but not too hard and with no wind, it’s a proper winter’s day. After yesterday’s busy morning we have been keeping our cantering close to home and having a walk and trot, plus a single canter on Hamilton Hill. All the horses are in very good form with plenty of them showing their wellbeing. We had a bit of fun this morning as we had a new yard man start, but he only lasted just over an hour as his experience was not what we had expected!

Hold Firm

It is great to see us on the hot trainers list in the Racing Post, two winners from four, with a 50% strike rate. It is a lot better than being on the cold list. We have one runner today. Topaling runs at Lingfield in the 3.20, the two mile handicap. She has been steadily slipping down the weights and although she only does what she wants, both at home and on the track, I am hopeful of a good run. Anna, the girl who rides her every day, tells me she feels in cracking form. So let’s hope she is on a going day today.

Prayer Time

Our mares are still hanging on. I can’t believe that we have not had another two foals by now. We have now got four overdue and I am just hoping that they now decide to do it on the same night, as it will make it much easier and less tiring. The first lot of foals continue to thrive and they really are attractive and strong. I am sure a lot of it is down to our feeding routine, as the mares have to get the right amount, both for them and the foal, especially in the last couple of months before foaling.

I have got the AGM of the Newmarket Trainers Federation today at 3 o’clock, which could be a lively affair as there will be plenty of forthright opinions that will be in the room. Both sides of the heath will have their problems and I am sure I will have to have my best controlling head on during the afternoon. Here in Newmarket we have got the best training grounds in the world and they are kept beautifully by the Jockey Club Estates, but at this time of year there is huge pressure from the trainers to use certain areas, and occasionally they become congested, which can cause problems. I will fill you in tomorrow, if I am still alive.
