"You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving."

The sunset over Newmarket last night

Warming up on the trotting ring first lot

It’s another frosty morning, but it doesn’t seem as cold as yesterday. I am told that rain is on its way for tomorrow, with it warming up towards the end of the week. It has been quite pleasant working this morning, with everybody in, including Saleem who always comes now on a Tuesday and Friday. I try and put him on a variety of horses so that he gets used to them all, although he has been monopolising Mr Turner of late. All went well first two lots and we used Southfields Round, New Ground and Southfields. There is so much ground over Racecourse Side with a big assortment of canters and surfaces, including the Links, so that the horses never seem to get bored and it keeps the lads on their toes as they are never sure where I am going to send them.

Dunaden ex Astrodiva filly foal

Astrodiva produced a filly foal by Dunaden this morning. I think she surprised everybody as she had shown no signs of anything during most of the night and suddenly started around 3 o’clock. She produced a strong, attractive filly that was soon up and sucking and is from the first crop of the Melbourne Cup winner. There are all sorts of incentives that the stallion owner has introduced for the offspring and let’s hope this filly can win some of them. She certainly looks the part.

Cheltenham is nearly upon us and what a great week it will be from Tuesday onwards. I have been challenged once again by Richard Marriott to our normal tipping competition and we will be trying to beat the bookies all week. It is always a bit of fun and let’s hope I can come out on top again as usual. There was always talk about extending the Festival into Saturday and having a five day jamboree. However, if you have ever been for more than two days, you know it is very hard going and it will take away a lot and to me, be seen to just be money grabbing rather than being in the best interest of the sport. It is such a good week, don’t change it.
