A perfect spring morning

It's a perfect spring morning and, with a full complement of staff all in and working well, we've had a very good start to the week cantering on the turf on new ground. We could just do with a week of this weather which will promote the growth of grass.

It looks as if we shall have just a couple of runners this week, one tomorrow at Southwell and one on Wednesday at Kempton. It's the start of the Festival tomorrow and so also the start of our annual tipping competition between Richard Marriott and me. We shall be trying our best to tip all the winners which is always very hard. The ground has gone to good to soft as I predicted, and I wouldn't put it past the clerk of the course to water on Thursday night if the weather stays like this all week.

Our mares are continuing to be covered and we have some in foal already. The choice of stallions is always fascinating as the obvious ones are always full up. It is such a fashion governed industry that there are several very good stallions who for some reason don't get patronised enough. The breeders always seem to want a fast turn around offspring rather than the more late developing type. It will be interesting to see which way the industry goes in the next few years.

I see in Australia a horse has lost a race because it's jockey had overstepped the whip rule. The jockey in question had struck her mount three times more than was allowed. I hope this starts a precedent throughout the world and it was interesting to read that our BHA director of regulation states, "The rules the way they are currently worded do not provide for it" - which says to me that they may be looking at our rules about disqualification. I hope they are as we all need a level playing field.
