The horses are very fresh and well

"Trip over love, you can get up. Fall in love and you fall forever."

In the trotting ring at first lot

It’s not a bad morning weather wise, with high wispy clouds, no wind and the temperature is about normal for this time of year. It has been a busy morning so far and we have been using Southfields Round and the Rubbing House polytrack for the majority of our exercise. All the horses seem very fresh and well and although we have not had any loose ones yet, there have been one or two lads hanging off the sides without actually hitting terra firma. It is great to see the horses so fresh and well at this time of year. The grass flat gallops are all opening now and we should be able to crack on and start proper fast work.

Cantering on Southfields Round

I see Long Run has been retired after running in a hunter chaser at Carlisle at the weekend. He has been a marvellous horse for the family that own him and it was a sensible decision to retire him. It is a pity the stewards were a bit over zealous to ban the jockey, who will now miss the Foxhunters at Liverpool unless he appeals. I hope common sense prevails as finishing third didn’t mean much betting wise. Whilst I am on my soap box, I should say that the uproar over the Vautour not running in the Gold Cup, but winning the Ryanair Chase is purely down to the owners and trainers decision. It is their horse and they can do exactly what they want with it. Some punters will have lost some ante post money, but that should never come into anything when deciding the best thing for the horse, which as it turned out was absolutely the correct decision.

Bracken Brae

Congratulations to Richard Marriott on winning the Cheltenham challenge and he well and truly beat me. We now move on to Aintree where the challenge will be continued and I will be trying my best to square it up for the year. The final figures will be produced tomorrow when Ian gets back to work as he is having a day off today. His previous job was working for a bookmaker so he can do the settling to a penny. It won’t make pretty reading for me.
