They are not children ...

Astrosecret makes her debut today

Friday, 01 April 2016

"Here cometh April again, and as far as I can see the world hath more fools in it than ever."

Charles Lamb.

It started off a very frosty morning with me having to scrape the car and the horsebox when I set off at 3.30 this morning to take a mare to be covered in Gloucestershire. Barry was in charge of the cantering in the yard and that has all, so far, gone without a hitch. That cannot be said of me as having covered the mare successfully at 7.45, I am at this moment in time sitting in a motorway service station waiting for a motor mechanic to arrive. I filled up with diesel on my way back and everything was going very smoothly until glancing down at the fuel gauge it was going down at a great rate of knots. There must be a leak in the fuel line somewhere and I am awaiting the recovery vehicle. I must be a jinx, as the last time I did this the engine blew up and that cost me £5,500. I hope this doesn’t cost as much and this is not an April fool.

Sir Percy ex Missouri

Peeps was disappointing yesterday when she ran at Wolverhampton, but I am sure it was my mistake as I changed the blinkers for cheekpieces. She will have a short break now then return on the turf with the headgear back on.

We have one runner today where Astrosecret makes her debut in the one mile two furlong maiden at Lingfield. This looks a warm enough race, but she will gain plenty of education from it and improve considerably.

Topamichi has been declared to run at Ascot on Sunday over hurdles, unless it absolutely pours with rain. He has always schooled very well, is in good form at home, and I am just hopeful of a clear round and a reasonable run.

Careless Rapture

I see they have changed the penalties for the jockeys that make dangerous manoeuvres, similar to last year’s St Leger when the jockey was only done for careless riding. I personally don’t think this will make a lot of difference to how they ride, especially in the big races as the win at all cost culture is inevitable if the penalty is not disqualification. In France you cannot even make a minor misdemeanour before losing the race and it would be very interesting to see how this rule is policed. They have done nothing about the number of whip strokes, which as you all know is one that I wholeheartedly agree about, but we won’t go into that here once again.

Which way is the wind blowing

Hopefully I will be back home by tomorrow so I can sing happy birthday down the phone to Richard Marriott. All at Frankland Lodge and Dullingham Park wish him a very happy day.
