The times run are very slow

It’s a glorious morning today with bright sunshine, no wind and the temperature is holding up ok. It’s much better than yesterday which was one of those horrible days, with driving rain all morning and then heavy showers on and off for the rest of the day. It certainly kept the ground here at Newmarket on the soft side with all the times showing it was getting progressively softer, and the last race being run 15 seconds slower than standard. We have been cantering on the Hamilton Hill polytrack, doing two good swinging canters with everything. All has gone well and the horses are looking pictures in the sunshine.

I have withdrawn Mr Turner today at Newmarket as the ground is going to be soft and sticky. All this family have been much better on a faster surface and I think we are better waiting until the ground comes in our favour. It is really frustrating at times, but we have had a very good start to the year and I want to maximise all the horses, which means looking after them and not wasting runs.

I see Corals are still complaining about the approved betting partnership scheme as more and more new bookmakers join the club, but some of the big boys are still resisting. I can’t see any reasoning behind this, other than they didn’t think of it first and the sooner they join the better for everybody. We must all work together as an industry and not keep pulling apart. I think the more they complain, the more the betting public will use other firms, so the ball is in their court. My advice is to sign up quick and move on.

It was the start of the two day breeze-up sale in Newmarket and one or two made plenty of money, including I am pleased to see, a half-brother to our Desert River, who made £210,000 bought by Godolphin. The partnership in Desert River is now full and I look forward to a good season ahead.
