"Instinct is untaught ability."

Alexander Bain.

Mr Turner

It's a much colder morning and if the forecast is to be believed it will be continuing like this over the weekend with bands of rain from Sunday onwards. I've worked first lot across the flat on the turf which, according to the riders, was very good ground. All went well. We have so many horses lining up to run when the ground is suitable. I have kept all the rest quite close to home. They will be having a good healthy exercise and canter and then back to their warm boxes with two rugs on.

Only one runner this weekend which will be Prayer Time on Sunday. He runs in  the 4.50 at Thirsk. I have fitted blinkers on him for the first time even though he won without them last time, to call him a character is an understatement. He has plenty of ability and if getting a good draw he should run very well. It looks as though we shall be having several runners on Monday and it could be a busy week.

Cantering on Hamilton Hill

It's the climax of the jump season this weekend and the trainers' title looks like going right down to the wire. We all must congratulate Richard Johnson on winning the jockey's title - a thoughly deserved accolade. But for A.P. he would have been champion jockey at least ten times. It was just unfortunate that he was riding in the same era as such an outstanding sportsman.

The classic trials continue today with the one at Sandown. The great winter hope of Newmarket, Midterm, reappears with very little to beat. What a great pedigree this colt has, Galileo out of Midday. He is certainly bred to be a Derby winner.
