It was a very exciting weekend of racing

The string walking in the sunshine

It’s not a bad morning today. We have not had the rain as yet although I am reliable informed it is on its way, but the forecast for the week is much improved. Hopefully the ground will be drying up so we can start having plenty more runners. It has been quite a busy morning so far with two lots of owners popping in to see their horses and make plans for the future. They have all gone away very positive and cheerful.

It was an exciting weekend in Newmarket and two Classics are already over, with one trained in Newmarket and one going across the Irish Sea once again. We saw a lot of excellent racing and I am sure there were a lot of future winners on show, however they ran. The one thing to take out of the races was how the draw was a major factor. Anything drawn against the stand side had a big advantage and anything trying to challenge or drawn in the middle of the track had very little hope. Since the courses have started to water and over protect the tracks with frost covers, it has taken the nature out of the turf and I think it would be far better just to throw everything away and start afresh. If you were drawn on the heath side you had no chance whatsoever. I am sure we saw two top class winners, but I would think that the fillies’ race was of a higher standard than the colts.

Jewelled and her Paco Boy filly foal

Our last foal of the season arrived on Friday night, a very attractive filly by Paco Boy. This is very exciting as the 2000 Guineas winner, Galileo Gold, was by the same sire. The foal was quickly up and sucking and you couldn’t wish for a nicer foal. It is the first time we have foaled the dam Jewelled, but she had very good colostrum and is a good mother, if a little foal proud, but you would be with one as attractive as this. I think this year’s foal crop is a really good bunch and although I don’t like to wish my life away, I can’t wait for two years’ time when they will be coming into training.
