It’s been a very warm weekend and it looks like summer is just starting to arrive, however, I see the forecast is for it to get much cooler for the end of the week. It’s a cracking morning here though so far and the horses look marvellous in the sunshine. We have been cantering on Southfields Round and the Rubbing House polytrack doing Monday morning canters, which means a good warm up followed by a steady long canter. We will be having a few runners this week, a couple tomorrow and I think one at Newmarket later on. The flat season is just starting to burst into life now and if they all stay healthy, we will be very busy over the next few months.

Our two runners on Friday were very contrasting with Astrosecret behaving completely out of character when refusing to go anywhere near the stalls at Lingfield and had to be withdrawn at the start. She had behaved impeccably until then and had not given an inch of trouble when last running there. It means we will have to have a stalls test, but I know she is not frightened or wary of the stalls and we will just have to get her past as quickly as possible. It was a great shame as she would have benefited from another run and I am sure would have been in the first four. Dot Green ran a race full of promise at Ascot in what would have been one of the hottest fillies’ maidens of the year. She was beaten only about three lengths and there will be plenty of winners come out of the whole race. In fact I think the race could throw up Group and black type performers.

It looks like Folkestone racecourse is in trouble as the local council are planning to build 12,000 homes and a new garden city very close to the track. The infrastructure is all in place there with the motorways, the fast train lines and euro tunnel all in close proximity. It is a great shame as Folkestone was one of those fun tracks to go to and although the racing wasn’t top class, it was always competitive in a very relaxed atmosphere. It may be that the owners of the track sell some of their land for building and keep the racecourse, but at present it doesn’t look very hopeful. It is a great shame.
