Topamichi walking round the yard

It’s much cooler this morning which I think is the prediction for the whole weekend. I don’t think any rain is forecast though so the tracks will all be starting to dry out. In fact they have been watering at York and also here at Newmarket. You all know my views on watering so I won’t go on about it again. We have had a mixed morning work wise with plenty of good cantering work being done and some fast work.

Prayer Time

We have one runner today and over the weekend we have two on Sunday. Our runner today is Heavensfield at Newmarket. She runs in the mile and a half maiden at 4.25. She was very green on her first run and only got the idea in the final couple of furlongs when she started to stay on well. I am sure the trip will suit her today, but this still looks a pretty warm race and I am hopeful that she can run well.

On Sunday our two runners, Topamichi and Prayer Time, are over hurdles, both in the same race, the 2.10 at Market Rasen. Topamichi has had two runs over hurdles without showing a great deal, but he is a good jumper and I have always thought him very capable of winning races. He was too fresh last time and ran a bit with the choke out, but I am sure he will settle better and I think will perform with credit. Prayer Time is making his debut over hurdles after winning twice on the flat. He has schooled well and I am sure this experience will put him right for the future. I hope they both run well.

Careless Rapture warming up before cantering

We saw the last of the Derby trials yesterday with the Dante being won at York by a twice raced Wolverhampton maiden winner. If you had fancied your horse at Wolverhampton in the maiden that day, you would have gone home wondering if it was any good or not, but after yesterday you would get a resounding yes. It is amazing how these big yards with huge numbers of horses suddenly has one jump out the woodwork, which had been on the back burner and unconsidered. When horses start improving they can do it very fast and this horse must come into the ring for the Derby. I still think if I was putting my money down it would be on the Irish trained US Army Ranger.

Careless Rapture

I have been very quiet on the subject all year, but my football team, Sheffield Wednesday, have been going on very well and it is the first of the big play offs tonight against Brighton. I think it is live on TV and let’s hope the Owls can score at least three and then get a goalless draw in the return leg and we will be off to Wembley.
