It’s a warm sunny morning and it looks like staying that way all week. It will do the fillies the world of good and the grass on the stud should start to fly up again. It looks a busy week ahead with plenty of runners and let’s hope we can start to knock a few winners in.

We were pleased with Prayer Time on Friday who jumped very well and just got a bit tired in the straight. He is getting the hang of this jumping lark and I am sure will be getting his head in front once we get the handicap mark and a bit of easier ground.

We have one runner tonight at Pontefract. Topaling runs in the Pontefract stayer’s handicap at 7.15. She has never shown her best form on turf yet, but I am hoping that she can perform well tonight. I think the track will suit her and if getting this very stiff trip, she shouldn’t be too far away. Not wishing to blow my own trumpet, but I did give you both Classic winners at the weekend and I think we saw one of the all-time star fillies in Minding and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the first two in the Derby don’t prove they are stars of the future, both on the track and in the breeding shed.

I see the audience for both the Oaks and the Derby were down once again and it is such a disappointment, but whether you are watching it on the TV, or listening on the radio, the build up to it in the previous fortnight has been minimal. I know I bang on about the Melbourne Cup, which is a two mile handicap, but it does stop the southern hemisphere and is headline news on the TV, radio and front and back pages in the newspapers. We just don’t seem to get it right at all and let’s hope ITV can put some oomph into the greatest race in the world. I don’t know what the crowd figures were, but just watching the television it looked like the crowds were down in the middle of the course and I see there were outbreaks of fighting and the riot police were called, which can only put people off attending in the future. I personally think we need to take a big deep breath and look at the whole of the racing programme with industry figures that have our long term future in mind, rather than the short term profit grabbing ones we have a present.
