Two runners tonight at Newmarket

"Collect moments, not things."

Waiting Instruction

It’s an overcast day, very similar to yesterday and you didn’t quite know what to put on the horses when they went out to exercise. In fact, they set off with their light sheets on, but by the time they had got to where I was giving the instructions, we decided to pull the sheets forward and sit on them as they were starting to get warm. I used the Cambridge Road polytrack at first lot and the Rubbing House one at second lot. It is amazing how much rain we have actually had, and it seems to be very localised in that one side of the town gets 20mm, and the other side gets nothing. It’s a bit like that with the racecourses.

Careless Rapture on the Cambridge Road

It was a mixed day yesterday with our runners after the good day before. Heavensfield ran well for a long way in what was quite a good race and I am sure there will be plenty of winners come out of it. We learnt a lot from it and I am sure she will be putting her best foot forward pretty soon. At Lingfield, Blue Bounty lost a cheekpiece, which I have never seen before. He also missed the break, but still didn’t run too badly. Permera’s race was run at a ridiculously slow, stop go pace and it was a very slow time. She is a filly that stays well and you can just put a line through this race and look to the future on firm ground on the turf. The one good thing to immerge from yesterday is that the handicapper should start to give us a chance.

We have two runners today, both in the same race at Newmarket tonight at 8.35. Astrowizard makes his debut and Astrosecret runs for the second time after passing the stalls test for her display of naughtiness. Astrowizard is one of those horses who has never stopped growing and is at least 17’ 1. In this race where the form looks ok, I don’t think he will trouble the judge tonight. Astrosecret certainly has the ability to run reasonably well, but as long as she goes in and comes back safely there will be plenty of days for her.

Ascot continues and I think that the quote of the year was heard after the Britannia when the owner, Michael Buckley, speaking to Emma Spencer said “I love Jamie Spencer, probably as much as you once did.” What a brilliant off the cuff sharp remark. There is so much fun and craic to be had out of horse involvement and it doesn’t matter if you are winning at Royal Ascot, or the lowliest of races, you get a feeling which is unparalleled. I did catch up a bit yesterday, but only with a couple of short price winners and I need to have a few more today to set up tomorrow’s final day
