I think it will be a very similar day to yesterday, which started off bright sunshine but soon went cloudy and then heavy rain late afternoon. That’s the forecast and I think they will be correct once again. We have kept close to home with the horses this morning, with a good long walk and trot and then a sensible canter, followed by a good pick of grass in the paddocks. All very relaxed for both horses and humans.

We have no runners today but plenty from now onwards, with three tomorrow and then two on Saturday. The ground is still a major problem with most of the tracks and just when it starts to dry out, we get another downpour and it goes soft again. I am sure we will soon get a drought and it will be rock hard everywhere. Let’s hope the barmy clerks of courses don’t start watering, but I wouldn’t hold your breath as I am positive they will.

It was the Racehorse Owners Association’s annual get together yesterday with the new president giving his first speech to the gathered masses. He first called for the fixture list to be giving to the BHA for their overall control. As you know the racecourses own the majority of the fixtures and can really say where or when and at what time fixtures can be run. It has made for a complete mess of the whole situation, with so many fixtures crammed in of similar days and geographical clashes. It would be much better if the BHA did control all the fixtures, if they had someone that knew what they were doing. It would help everybody, but especially the public and the horsemen. We had this blowing of trumpets last year to announce the tripartite agreement between the BHA, the horsemen and the racecourses, but as usual none of them can agree on anything and I can’t see this suggestion going anywhere. However, it is the most sensible of things to do and I have been going on about it for the last 40 years at least.
