"Childhood is the most beautiful of all life’s seasons."

Walking to the canters

Regal Galaxy and Peeps

It is very warm and muggy and it was 18 degrees when I was feeding at 4.30 this morning. I had to take my sweater off as it was so warm and it has got progressively warmer as the day has gone on. We have had a very good exercise morning with the first two lots using the Cambridge Road polytrack for a good swing after a couple of preliminary canters on the Links polytrack. The Cambridge Road all-weather rode very well and I was pleased with everything.

Astrowizard leading Lost The Moon

Permera took the scenic route yesterday at Brighton, under my instructions I must say, but nobody else thought it was the right way so consequently she gave away as much distance as she was beaten by. There will be other days for her and the owners shouldn’t get too despondent as I am sure I will find another race for her pretty quickly.

Bracken Brae and Astrosecret

I see at the St Leger lunch yesterday, John Gosden was saying he was gravely concerned that the majority of breeders are now breeding horses to run shorter and shorter. This has been the trend for many years now after all the owner / breeders either died or sold their studs. The old breeders to race studs have disappeared now and most people are in it for a quick buck. We have got nearly 5000 yearlings for sales starting shortly and everybody wants to sell, but not race. This all stems from the financial situation in the industry and it is beginning to get serious now.

I also see that the Ladbrokes sponsorship will be dropped after Saturday’s St Leger, purely because Ladbrokes won’t sign up as an ABP partner. This to me is the most silly situation as the bookmakers need us and there must be a compromise between all parties shortly.

Heavensfield and Dot Green

Our great weight loss for charity has done very well during August with one or two really getting to grips with the idea. There are still a couple who are out with the washing and not putting much effort in and I keep reminding them it is for a very good cause and they need to put their blinkers on and start to run. The grand weight loss total for the first month is 114lbs, which is a great achievement by everybody and we are now into the first week of the second month. I don’t think the weight loss will be quite as much this month, but you never know, especially if the few back markers can get the turbo charge turned on.
