"A cloudy day or a little sunshine have as great an influence on many constitutions as the most recent blessings or misfortunes."

- Joseph Addison

Astrodiva (Holly) and Brushing (Nikki)

A very nice, clear morning with no wind and bright sunshine, which was a complete contrast to most of yesterday after all that rain and the course at Newmarket was atrocious, especially for those last three races. We have kept to the polytracks this morning, which are in amazing shape.

Red Barcelona (Alex) and Kathleen Frances (Butch)

Battery Power ran a race full of promise at Lingfield, particularly being drawn very badly, as we know, but she travelled well and made up ground towards the finish. The family all improve with age and she will develop along similar lines. We will just put a line through the two runners at Newmarket as they were too bad to be true.

Star Commander (Ashley) and Izzet (Wajid)

One runner today, Smokey Oakey in the Cambridgeshire, who has been a marvellous servant to us and is still in good form. He lost his action completely last time at Goodwood and, I don't like to say it, but the ground today will be very similar. They have raced on it for two days and there will be plenty of runners today to open it up before the Cambridgeshire comes under orders. I am just hoping he can run a good race and I have fitted the visors for the first time to help him concentrate.

Walking home on a very muddy horsewalk after yesterday's deluge

A fantastic sporting weekend with great racing both at Newmarket and at Longchamp but the ground will play a major part at both venues. The Ryder Cup got off to a wet start yesterday with a big hold-up in play but from now on there will be plenty of action and the television zapper will be going backwards-and-forwards all weekend. Arsenal play Chelsea on Sunday, which will sort the men from the boys and The Owls are away at Notts. County. I think I would take a draw.
