We have two runners today

A misty start to the day

Bracken Brae leading Astrowizard and Lost the Moon

It started off quite cold this morning and a lot of thick mist has been hanging about until well past second lot. Autumn is starting to be properly upon up. I have kept the horses close to home with two canters on Hamilton Hill and with a full complement of staff, things have moved along nicely. It should be a reasonably busy week for us with runners today, Wednesday, Thursday and hopefully Saturday. I have not heard any coughing, the temperatures are good and the bloods are starting to stabilise. We will know more after this week’s runners.

Permera and Regal Galaxy

We are sending out two runners today. Our first is Topalova at Yarmouth where the ground has now changed. This just goes to show that with the 48 hours declarations and the courses constantly watering, you have got to be a mind reader to know what the final ground will be like. They have only had 7mm but it has changed from good to firm, to good to soft. Topalova is capable of getting involved today. I have fitted cheekpieces and I wouldn’t put anybody off having 50p each way at a big price.

Our other runner is tonight at Chelmsford where we run Desert River. He has won here on the track and been second on the turf, but has been quite tricky at the stalls. He passed his stalls test and with Georgia his pilot tonight, who knows him well, we are hoping he will be on his best behaviour. He is not drawn very well in 15, but is usually quick out and if we get any luck in running, he should run well.

Sweeping Beauty

I see Graham Lee the jockey has come out and said he is suffering from mental health issues and that racecourse rumours have not helped him. It is very hard for these jockeys, and everybody else in the industry, with the constant everyday pressures of general working and going racing. The fixture list just keeps on expanding and nobody has time to think, or even relax, which would certainly benefit the whole of the workforce. There is plenty of help though for anybody who wants it and I hope Graham, who is a very good jockey, can get back to full health.
