October 2 is underway

It started off bitterly cold and thick fog this morning. In fact it was highly dangerous coming into the yard at 5.30 and I had three near misses within 100 yards. One was a vet, who was completely lost and couldn’t find the yard he wanted, another was a lad in a very dark jacket walking in the middle of the road and the other was a horse and rider who shouldn’t have been out at that time anyway. It makes for an interesting start. First lot galloped on the watered gallop, which is still riding very well and I must say the horses are starting to look right and are working with zest. I know it is coming to the end of the turf season, but I will keep quite a few of these going on the all-weather.

Our runners yesterday didn’t run too badly. Topalova came from a long way back to be nearest at the finish and came fifth, but I think she will benefit from a bit further. Desert River, who had very little chance from his outside draw, went in the stalls ok when he decided he was ready, and was slightly rocking back when the gates opened. He ran on when it was all over and it was very similar to his race at Nottingham. He will now be spot on for next time.

Cantering up Hamilton Hill at second lot

It was the first day of October 2 yearling sales yesterday and the only thing I can say is it’s a good job that the Maktoum family are still so enthusiastic and are investing in so many horses. They counted for the vast majority of horses in October 1 and it looks like they will be doing the same in 2. Along with a few other elite owners, they are keeping the prices way out of the budget of many owners, new or old. I have said it for many years that the bubble must burst at some stage, but as yet it has not. It may get more sensible in October 3 and 4, but we will have to wait and see.

I see Chester is going to repeat its appearance money scheme again in 2017. This is a marvellous scheme and all the owners are very appreciative as it is so costly to transport horses about the country. However, Chester also looks after its owners and is by far and away the best at it of all the racecourses. They deserve all the plaudits they get.
