It's a dark start to the morning

It’s chalk and cheese weather wise this morning from yesterday. We have got a bright clear morning with plenty of sunshine and no wind, so it’s keeping the temperature very mild. In fact yesterday it was a similar day by lunchtime, bright and sunny and a lovely autumn day. It has been busy already today with horses going off to two race meetings. The general exercise has gone well and we have kept them close to home with a good walk and gentle canter in the sunshine.

We have two runners today, one at Nottingham this afternoon and one tonight at Kempton. Sandwood Bay is our runner at Nottingham in the mile and a bit nursery handicap at 3.15. Stevie Donohoe rides. She has run well in all her races without having too much luck and coming up against one or two good ones. I am not too sure about the draw in 16, but I think they will come down the middle and feel she will run with great credit today. Tonight Astrowizard has his third run in the mile and a half maiden at 7.55. He has not shown a great deal so far, but will be handicapped after tonight and we will find out a bit more about whether he stays or not. He couldn’t be worse drawn than he is at 13 and will have to drop in and try and make some ground late on.

Second lot is a lot brighter and exercise is over

It is building up well to the big Champion’s Day at Ascot this weekend where they have been making all the preparations to use the jump course in case of heavy rain. This is because of the complaints from everybody that the ground at this time of year is usually soft and it is not a level playing field. As usual nature has played a trick on them and the ground will be absolutely perfect if the forecast is anything to go by. In fact if they get no rain, it could be on the fast side of good. It will be a great days racing, but I am not sure that it has ever worked properly as a spectacle as it is at the wrong time of year and is competing with so many other top races worldwide.
