It's been an action packed morning

Lost The Moon

Bracken Brae and Velvet Voice

We had quite a bit of rain last night, plus some wind, but that has now all died down and it is a bright sunny cold morning. It has been an incident packed one already when I was just in the right place to call an ambulance for one of the other strings lads who had fallen off and got trodden on. We have new medics on the heath now who were the first arrivals followed by the ambulance, which carted him off to hospital. I think his leg was only badly bruised, but x-rays will be the decider. We also then had a loose horse ourselves when one decided to whip round and gallop home, plus another string had a runaway, which looked like galloping over the fallen lad before I stepped in the way, so quite a morning. We have been cantering on Hamilton Hill with no coughers and the horses being mad fresh, which is always a good sign.

It was good to see the Europeans win some races at the Breeders’ Cup although they all ran on Lasix, which I see has not been commented on in the press. It may be just a case of doing what everyone else does and making it a level playing field. It is no good everybody bleating about drug taking to improve performance if there are not the same rules worldwide.

Picking up the patient

With the death of Vautour in the paddock this weekend it just goes to show that accidents can happen all the time with horses and not only did the Mullins’ yard lose him, they lost a very good horse yesterday when it jumped through its tendon at the racetrack. This is a very common career ending injury and it happened to me once or twice. We were looking at making a special boot to stop this type of injury with the chainmail insert, but the boot was quite heavy and so this idea didn’t get off the ground. It certainly would be something for the saddlers to research as anything that prevents injury is gratefully received.
