The foal sales continue at Tattersalls

"Just as much as we see in others we have in ourselves."

William Hazlitt.

It’s quite still this morning with very little breeze. It’s dry though and not too cold. I think we have been lucky in the south as it has been very cold in Scotland with plenty of frost and Musselburgh is already abandoned because of hard patches. We have been doing two canters on the polytracks on racecourse side and with everybody in and working, it’s going very smoothly this morning. We have had one of the new yearlings ridden round the yard and she took to it like a duck to water.

Topaling blew up yesterday at Wolverhampton. She travelled well for quite a while before getting very tired. This race would have brought her on a lot and I will be running her again quickly next week. She is a real character of a filly who owes us nothing but it would be nice to win another race with her which she is very capable of if she decides to do it. Yesterday’s run can be put purely down to fitness and her needing it badly.

It was the first day of the foal sale yesterday with a lot of foals not sold, in fact the clearance rate was pretty poor and I am sure one or two of the ones sold were bought back by connections. It is always the weakest day though and I am sure the standard of foal will get better as the week goes on. It’s a very fashionable business in that stallions come in and out of favour very quickly and when you are breeding and planning matings you are having to think at least three years in advance, which is always a nightmare. Everybody in the breeding business has to be congratulated for their stickability.
