A near miss

"The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears".

Arabian Proverb.

Red sky in the morning...

It started off dark and misty but it has very quickly got brighter and we have had a beautiful sunrise. I took first lot to the Cambridge Road polytrack which means you have to cross the main Newmarket to Cambridge road to get there. Although we have flashing lights and street lamps you still take your life in your hands crossing these junctions. At the second one, despite being  in my yellow reflective top, a car that was going very fast didn't see me until the last minute. We have been campaigning for years to get these roads sorted out with proper traffic lights but to no avail. It may not be in my lifetime but I suspect some sort of underpass will be the only way to make it perfectly safe.

It was very sad to wake up this morning to hear of the death of Walter Swinburn at the young age of fifty five . He was one of the generation of jockeys who I grew up with and he was a master of his art. A three times Derby winning jockey, he had hands like silk and an ice cold nerve. He retired quite early and had a successful training career but retired due to commercial reasons. His family run the Genisis Green Stud just outside Newmarket and our deepest condolences go to the whole family.

The Jim Best inquiry finished yesterday after the BHA were forced to hear the case again. It's been a debacle right from the beginning and the BHA are counting the cost. As we said before the owners are the ones being hit by the 7% rise in fees by the BHA. I hope this is nothing to do with the case as I should have thought the BHA would have had their own insurance policy to fund any diputes. As for the verdict four years reduced to six months, everybody will have their own view on this. I just think in future the BHA should think carefully before acting .
