A cool, foggy morning...

Smokey Oakey leads the string across the Limekilns in the thick fog

Akula (Ashley)

A cool, foggy morning first thing and it got foggier the further you went onto the gallops; it seemed as if the Heath was attracting the mist. I was half expecting to see the ghost of Fred Archer and Atty Persse coming galloping over the hill. Instead we had to take extra precautions as we crossed the roads, especially alongside the Limekilns, as we made our way to Railway Land. We have had a few near misses in the past at the crossings, as have most trainers in Newmarket and the wearing of the fluorescent coats and strips is imperative. We try to make it compulsory as the mornings draw in and, particularly, when we have the weather like we are having this morning.

Finger Spin (Abby)

Both runners ran well at York on Saturday. Dulcie performed with great credit and that will have put her spot on for the Cesarewitch, if she gets in next weekend. We have been plagued with all sorts of problems, especially with splints, which have not been helped by the firm ground this summer, so I was especially delighted with her run this weekend. Kathleen Frances ran another race full of promise for the future and she will now be put away for next season. One comment on her race, I cannot believe there was no stewards' enquiry and that Paul Hanagan did not get days for hampering Kathleen inside the final furlong. Maybe the York stewards wanted to get off home early but I would have liked to have seen some sort of investigation. Jockeys have been given days constantly for a lot less than happened here. I have no favourite in the jockeys' championship and wish them both well but feel, on this occasion, he was very lucky not to have been banned.

Astroleo (Little Abby)

One runner today at Windsor, Ice Magic who runs in the 2.30 pm race. He is drawn well today and has no weight, so he  must have a chance of making the frame once again. Also, he stays well and the ground should suit.

Brushing (Nikki)

A good result on Saturday with The Owls winning at home, putting them back into the play-off positions  but I have still got Michael Bowring crowing, as The Seagulls are still top. You may have also read that, at long last, somebody has seen the light and has invested in Sheffield Wednesday; in fact, they look like taking them over altogether - let's hope it is the real deal and we can get the glamour club of Sheffield back where they belong: in the Premiership.

Making sure no one is lost in the fog at the top of Railway Land!
