"Mothers and daughters are closest, when daughters become mothers."

There were a few specks of snow at 5.30 this morning but that seems to have disappeared and it is cold but calm at the moment. I think it is set to stay like this and get even colder as the weekend comes. We have been cantering on Southfields Round and Hamilton Hill this morning and everybody is in great spirits after the good day we had yesterday. There is nothing like having a winner or two for team morale and it doesn’t matter whether you are the newest yardman, or the middle aged accounts manager, you get a big thrill from success. Let’s hope it continues.

We saw off the mare Jewelled this morning who is catching the ferry from Holyhead at lunchtime. She will be boarding at Des and Mariann’s stud at Swordlestown Little as she will be visiting Ruler Of The World at Coolmore The stallion won the Derby and Max and Malcolm are hoping to breed a Derby or a Melbourne Cup winner. Let’s hope it happens. It was marvellous yesterday for the stud as both the winners were homebred and showed great attitude and determination to win.

It was a good day yesterday with both the winners doing what I hoped they would do and Mr Turner running one of his best races. I think if he hadn’t missed the break, he would have been much closer and as it was, he was only beaten about 3 ½ lengths. We may drop him back in trip to seven furlongs and there is a race for him back at Chelmsford next week, which should suit.

We have one runner today again at Chelmsford City. Hold Firm runs in the 5.50, the mile and a quarter handicap and Luca Cumani’s apprentice, Gabriele Malune, takes the ride. He has been riding out for me for a couple of weeks now on work mornings and he is a very accomplished lad. He has had three winners so far and we will start to learn more about him as the year goes on. Hold Firm is not drawn very well tonight, but should run well as the two favourites are front runners and will give us a good lead into the final furlong.

There is a great article on Captain Ryan Price today in the Racing Post. He is one of the biggest characters in racing and he just loved winning the Schweppes Gold Trophy at Newbury. He was champion jumps trainer five times, won a Grand National, a Cheltenham Gold Cup, three Champion Hurdles and had three Classic winners on the flat. A great trainer and a great character. Where are they now?
