We have one runner today at Lingfield

Gee Sixty Six, Bracken Brae and Lost The Moon on the Cambridge Road polytrack

It’s much colder this morning, the car was showing just two degrees at 4 o’clock and there is rain and sleet forecast for the rest of the week. We have got a few more daffodils out at home that will soon be hiding once again as the week goes on. Stevie and Gabriele were both in again this morning and we have been working horses on the Cambridge Road polytrack. All went well. We had a new member of staff turn up, which helps, although one did get kicked yesterday and is having a few days off, so as normal it is swings and roundabouts. There is never one day in this business where everything goes to plan.

Mr Turner leading Indian Red

We have one runner today. Hold Firm runs in the last at Lingfield, the mile handicap for apprentices. Gabriele Malune rides and we are drawn eight. He is still in very good form, always does his best and let’s hope today is his day. He thoroughly deserves to get his head in front once again.

I see the BHA is considering an appearance money scheme offering money down to eighth place. The article explaining it has the view that this will make it much more competitive with at least eight runners in the field. I am not sure how much you will get for finishing eighth and I don’t think they do either. It is just another BHA announcement without much thinking. The prize money must go up, it is as simple as that. It is all very well saying there is another 500 horses in training this year, but who owns them, certainly not the 95% of owners who love the sport but get very little back in prize money. It will be interesting to hear for myself when I go to one of these roadshows in the in near future, what our leaders have to say.
